Surgical Ward

The Surgical Ward has 39 beds for patients who have been or will be operated on in the theatre.  Surgical Ward has two dedicated theatres for their use.  In November 2008, the Operating Theatre Block was modernised and modified.  There is a generator at Kitovu Hospital that ensures that it is possible to continue with an operation even during a power cut.

The most common major surgical procedures carried out (not including caesarean and Obstetric Fistula Repair) are laparotomy and evacuations.  Minor surgical procedures carried out include herniorrhaphy, debridement and care of wounds and skin grafting, incision and drainage of abscesses and ear, nose and throat surgical procedures.  The surgical team at Kitovu Hospital are also kept busy with many people who have been involved in road traffic accidents.

In 2010/11 1,724 patients were admitted to Surgical Ward.  Also in this year Kitovu Hospital was accredited by COSECA (College of Surgeons of East and Central AFRICA) as a centre for post graduate surgical training (Fellowship in Surgery of  East Africa).
